How to Transfer Your Domain to FreshStore
If you own a domain at another registrar, you can move it to FreshStore. We then renew it for you each year, alongside your other FreshStore bills. Your store stays online the whole time.
A transfer can take up to 5 to 7 days, but it is often much sooner. If you approve the transfer when your current registrar asks, by email or in their dashboard, it can finish within hours.
What It Costs, and Why You Pay Again
A transfer costs the price shown for your domain's extension. You pay it when you start.
This often surprises people, because you already paid for the domain. Every domain transfer includes one year of renewal at the new registrar, and every registrar works this way. We add that year on top of your current expiry date, so you keep all the time you have already paid for.
Your next renewal is on the new expiry date. For example, say your domain expires on 1 March 2027 and you transfer it today. After the transfer it expires on 1 March 2028, and that is when it next renews with us, not one year from today.
The confirmation window shows all of this before you pay: the amount, your current expiry, the expiry after the transfer, and your next renewal date and price.
Before You Start
- Add the domain to FreshStore first. If you use it on a store already, it is in your account. If not, see How to add a custom domain.
- Unlock it at your current registrar. Turn off the transfer lock. It may be called domain lock, registrar lock or transfer protection.
- Get the transfer code. Your current registrar gives it to you. It may be called the auth code, authorization code or EPP code. Some show it on screen and some email it to you.
- New domains have to wait 60 days. An industry rule stops a domain moving registrar in the first 60 days after it is registered or transferred.
- The domain must be active. If the registration has run out, renew it at your current registrar first.
- Check where your DNS is hosted. If your domain uses your current registrar's nameservers, read Keep Your Store Online below before you start.
Where to Get Your Code
Each registrar has a help page that shows how to unlock your domain and get its transfer code:
- Namecheap
- GoDaddy
- Cloudflare
- Squarespace (this includes domains that used to be with Google Domains)
- Hostinger
- IONOS
- Name.com
- Wix
- Shopify
If your registrar is not listed, search its help pages for "transfer out" or "auth code".
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Open the domain
Go to Build > Domains. Click Transfer a domain in and enter the domain, or open the domain and find Transfer to FreshStore.
2. Enter the transfer code
Click Transfer to FreshStore and paste the code from your current registrar. Copy it exactly, including any symbols.
We check the domain before we take any payment. If something needs fixing first, such as the transfer lock, the page tells you what to do.
3. Confirm and pay
Read the confirmation window. It shows the amount you pay today, your current expiry, the expiry after the transfer, and your next renewal with us. Click Confirm & pay.
4. Approve the transfer
Your current registrar may email you to confirm the transfer, or show it in their dashboard. Approve it, and the transfer can finish within hours. Do not reject it, or the transfer stops. If you do nothing, most transfers go through on their own after 5 days.
5. Wait for it to finish
You can follow the transfer on the domain page, and we email you when it is done.
Once it is done, the domain renews with us automatically on its new expiry date. You no longer need to renew it at your old registrar.
Keep Your Store Online
A transfer moves only the registration. Your nameservers stay as they are.
If your domain already uses ns1.freshstore.app and ns2.freshstore.app, or Cloudflare, nothing changes and you do not need to do anything.
If your domain uses your current registrar's own nameservers, they usually stop working when the domain leaves. Your store and any email on the domain would stop with them. We warn you about this before you pay. To avoid it:
- If you use email on the domain, add its records in FreshStore first. See Can I add DNS records to my custom domain?
- Switch the nameservers at your current registrar to ns1.freshstore.app and ns2.freshstore.app.
- Wait until your domain page shows the domain as connected, then start the transfer.
Which Domains Can Move?
Most extensions can, including .com, .net and .org. We cannot take in .uk, .au or .si domains yet. You can keep those at your current registrar and keep using them on your store as you do now.
Questions and Troubleshooting
Why am I paying when I already own the domain?
Every transfer includes one year of renewal at the new registrar. We add that year on top of your current expiry, so you do not lose any time you already paid for. See What It Costs, and Why You Pay Again above.
When is my next renewal?
On the domain's new expiry date, which is your current expiry plus one year. It is not one year from the day you transfer. The confirmation window, the email we send and your domain page all show the date.
How long does it take?
Up to 5 to 7 days, often much sooner. If you approve the transfer when your current registrar asks, it can finish within hours.
Will my store go offline during the transfer?
No. Your store stays online during the transfer. The only risk comes after it finishes, if your DNS is hosted at your current registrar. See Keep Your Store Online above.
The page says the domain is locked.
Log in to your current registrar and turn off the transfer lock. Wait a few minutes, then try again.
The page says I have to wait 60 days.
This is an industry rule for every domain that was registered or transferred recently. The page shows the date you can start from.
My transfer code was not accepted.
We email you if this happens. Get a new code from your current registrar, check the domain is still unlocked, and enter the new code on your domain page. You do not pay again.
My domain renewed at my current registrar in the last few weeks.
Ask your current registrar before you start. If a domain renewed in the last 45 days, some registries do not carry that renewal over after a transfer.
Do I still own the domain after the transfer?
Yes. It stays yours. See If I buy a domain through FreshStore, do I own it?
Can I cancel?
Yes, until your current registrar has the request. Open the domain page and click Cancel this transfer. After that point, contact us.
The transfer did not go through.
The domain stays at your current registrar and keeps working. Our team is told straight away and will be in touch.
Can I move it away again later?
Yes, once 60 days have passed. See How to Transfer Your Domain to Another Registrar.
