How to redirect a domain to your store

If you own more than one domain for the same store, such as yourstore.com and yourstore.co.uk, you can send the extra ones straight to your store. You set it up yourself in your account, and we handle the security certificate for you.

How to set up a redirect

  1. Add the extra domain to your account and point its nameservers at FreshStore. See How to add a custom domain.
  2. When the domain shows as connected, go to Build > Domains and click the domain.
  3. Click Redirect to a store.
  4. Choose the store and click Redirect.

It usually goes live within a few minutes. The domain's page shows Setting up until then, and Live once it works. In Build > Domains, the Store column shows Redirects to and the store's name.

What the redirect does

  • Both versions of the domain redirect, with and without www.
  • The rest of the address is kept, so yourstore.co.uk/shop goes to yourstore.com/shop.
  • It is a permanent (301) redirect, which is the kind search engines expect, so the extra domain does not compete with your store in search results.
  • The extra domain gets its own SSL certificate, so visitors never see a security warning.

Changing or stopping a redirect

Open the domain from Build > Domains. Use Change store to send it somewhere else, or Stop redirecting to turn it off. The domain stays in your account either way, and you can use it on a store later.

If the page says Not working, it tells you why. The most common reason is an A or CNAME record you added yourself on the domain, which would answer instead of the redirect. Delete it under the domain's DNS Records tab, then click Check again.

Why can't I see Redirect to a store?

  • The nameservers are not pointing at FreshStore yet. The redirect needs our nameservers. If you would rather keep the domain's DNS where it is, use your registrar's URL forwarding instead.
  • A store is already on the domain. A domain is either a store's address or a redirect, not both.
  • It is a subdomain or a free FreshStore address. Only a full custom domain can redirect.
