How to import articles from Markdown or HTML files

If you write articles in another tool, such as an AI writer or another blog, you can upload the files and your store turns each one into an article. You can import up to 20 files at a time.

How to import your files

  1. In your store admin, go to Store > Articles > Import Articles.
  2. Drag your files into the Article files box, or click Choose files.
  3. Click Import.

The Last import table shows each file as Created or Skipped. It links to each new article and gives the reason for any file that was skipped.

Each imported article is saved as disabled, so nobody sees it yet. Check it, then enable it from its Settings tab to publish it.

File rules

  • Files must end in .md (Markdown) or .html.
  • Each file can be up to 1 MB.
  • Images stay where they are hosted. They are not copied to your store.
  • Scripts are removed.

Add the title and SEO fields

Put the article details at the top of the file, between two lines of three dashes. This is called front matter:

---
title: Best Wine Fridges
slug: best-wine-fridges
subtitle: Our top picks for every kitchen
meta_title: Best Wine Fridges for 2026
meta_description: The wine fridges we recommend, and why.
meta_keywords: wine fridge, wine cooler
author: Jane Smith
categories: [Guides, Kitchen]
---
  • Only the title is needed. Every other field is optional.
  • Without a title, the first H1 heading in the file is used.
  • Categories must already exist in Store > Articles > Categories.
  • An HTML file can use its own page title, meta description and meta keywords tags instead.

Questions and Troubleshooting

Why was my file skipped?

The Note column in the Last import table gives the reason. The usual ones are:

  • The file has no title and no H1 heading. Add a title to the front matter.
  • An article with the same slug already exists. Change the slug in the front matter and import the file again.
  • The file does not end in .md or .html, or it is empty.

Why is my imported article not showing on my store?

Imported articles are saved as disabled. Enable the article from its Settings tab.
