Countries & Languages - Feature Guide
Your store's Countries & Languages settings let you control which country your store targets by default, which countries visitors can browse in, and which language the built-in AI uses when generating content. These settings work together with Auto Country Localisation to give every visitor a relevant, native-language shopping experience.
Where to find these settings
Go to Settings > Store in your dashboard. You'll find the country and language settings in two sections on that page:
- Main Settings: Default Country and AI Language
- Front End: Enabled Countries
Settings explained
Default Country
This is the country your store targets first. It decides:
- Which country new visitors see when they can't be detected automatically
- Which Amazon, eBay, Walmart, etc. offers are imported first
- Which currency and flag are shown as the fallback
Pick the country you want your store to focus on. For most English-speaking stores this is the United States or the United Kingdom.
AI Language
The language the built-in AI uses when it generates content (product descriptions, category intros, article drafts, meta tags, and so on). Set this to match the language you want your store content to appear in.
Note: The AI Language setting is separate from the Default Country. If you want a French store, set Default Country to France and AI Language to French. If you only change one, the mismatch will show up in your content.
Enabled Countries
A list of all the countries your store is available in. Visitors from these countries can switch to their own country using the dropdown in the header. Visitors from countries not on this list will default to your Default Country.
By default, FreshStore enables the largest English-speaking markets. You can add or remove countries to match your niche and your affiliate accounts.
Tip: Only enable countries where you have affiliate accounts or where you know you'll get traffic. There's no benefit to enabling every country if you can't actually earn commissions from those visitors.
How visitors see countries on your store
When a visitor arrives, FreshStore:
- Detects their country from their IP address
- Checks whether that country is in your Enabled Countries list
- Shows the country flag, currency, and local offers if it is, or falls back to your Default Country if not
Visitors can also manually switch country using the dropdown in the top-left corner of the header. Their choice is remembered in a cookie.
For a full explanation of the visitor-facing behaviour, see the Auto Country Localisation guide linked at the bottom of this page.
Tips
- Set your Default Country to your biggest affiliate market. For new stores that's usually the US.
- Set the AI Language before you generate content. Changing the language later means regenerating content to match.
- If you're not planning to target a country, leave it out of Enabled Countries to keep the dropdown focused.
- The AI Language can be different from the Default Country's language if you want (for example, a US-targeted store written in Spanish for US Hispanic audiences).
Troubleshooting
"I clicked a Buy button and it took me to a search page instead of the product"
This is almost always Auto Country Localisation working as intended. Amazon product IDs (ASINs) are country-specific, so the same product on Amazon.com may not exist on other Amazon country sites. When a visitor in a different country clicks your Buy button, your store sends them to a search page on their local Amazon so they can still find and buy a similar product, and you still earn the affiliate commission.
If you want the Buy button to go to an exact product in another country, you can add country-specific offers to your products. See the Offer Settings guide linked below for how offers work and how to add them.
Testing your store? Remember that if you are browsing from a different country to where your products were imported, clicking a Buy button will send you to your local merchant, not the original one. This is expected behaviour, not a broken link.
"My store has no AI Language set"
Go to Settings > Store > Main Settings and choose an AI Language from the dropdown. English is the default for new stores, but it can be cleared by accident. Save the page after making a selection.
"I want to disable country localisation"
Auto Country Localisation can't be turned off because it's core to FreshStore's commission capture. If you only want to target one country, set your Default Country and then remove all other countries from Enabled Countries. The dropdown in the header will only show your single target country.
