Researching a niche

Once you have a few niche ideas, research them further to decide which one is best for you

You can use a spreadsheet to record some key details and compare them side-by-side. Below is a link to an example spreadsheet that you can use.

If you prefer to research your niches in another way, that's also fine - you write the details down in a notebook or type them into your phone notes.

Example spreadsheet

This spreadsheet includes an "Examples" tab at the bottom to show you how to fill it out.

The link requires a Google account and will use Google Drive. If you prefer to use Excel, you can download the spreadsheet. The link will prompt you to make your own copy of the spreadsheet:

Filling out the spreadsheet

Add the niches you are interested in to the left column.

Use the rest of the guides in this Niche Research category to help you fill out the rest of the columns.

Remember that none of this research is an exact science - fill it out as best you can, but don't get stuck on the details. The goal is to summarise the niches so it's easier to pick one.

Testing your favourite niche

You may already have a favourite niche on your list that you are passionate about and really want to build a store around.

That's great, but it can blind us to potential problems. That is why we do this niche research and take the time to test each niche.

Be honest with yourself about these niches as you work through the research - you may change your mind several times before the end!
