Deciding on your niche
If one of the suggested niches already appeals, that is your decision made. Pick it and create the store. This guide is for the moment when two or three are competing for the same slot and you want a way to settle it.
Whichever way you go, don't get stuck here. Be decisive, trust your decision, and remember you can pivot later.
Compare them
Run each niche past the same questions:
- Will it still be here in three years? If you are in any doubt, the answer is no.
- Is it seasonal? Do sales rise and fall predictably through the year, around Christmas or summer? Seasonal is fine as long as you know about it.
- Are there good products to promote? Yes or no, from your product check.
- How does the competition look? Rate it on how confident you are that you found real gaps, not on how big the biggest site is.
- Would you still enjoy this in a year? This is the question people skip and then regret.
If you like working things through on paper, we have a niche research spreadsheet with a column for each of these and an Examples tab showing how it is filled in. It is entirely optional. A page in a notebook or a note on your phone does the same job.
Be honest about your favourite
You probably had a favourite before you started, something you are passionate about and really want to build. That is a good sign, and it can also blind you to problems the research turned up. Give it the same scrutiny as the rest. Changing your mind two or three times before the end is normal.
The same goes for ideas you have been carrying around for years, along with the domain names you bought for them. If they no longer fit what you have learned, be strong and let them go.
Make the call
Get yourself a cup of tea, step away from the screen for a few minutes, then come back and rate each niche out of ten. This is not an exact science and it does not need to be. Your gut has a good idea already. If you are stuck, pick the first number that comes to mind.
If two are close, compare just those two directly. What are the positives and negatives of each? Which one excites you more? The decision is yours. Once you have made it, stick with it and move forward.
About the doubts
You will feel some, and they are worth less than they seem. Remember what you are risking. You are not buying stock or signing a lease. A store can be deleted and created again for nothing, you can add more stores in other niches, and everything the AI decides for you can be changed afterwards. Changing direction is cheap and quick, which is not true of most businesses.
If you really cannot decide, contact our support team and tell us your shortlist. We are happy to give you a view.
Now go and build it. Your niche is the one choice on the Create Store page that is really yours, and the store name, the web address, the categories, the products and the articles are all handled for you from there.
